A “word” in WPM is five characters, including spaces — not a real English word. Gross WPM ignores errors; net WPM counts only correct characters and is the more honest figure. Type Fast reports net.

SSC notifications often write 35 w.p.m. as 10,500 key depressions per hour. That is the same five-character definition: 10,500 ÷ 60 minutes = 175 characters per minute = 35 WPM. Accuracy rules on top of that are board-specific. We do not apply a commission’s error table, and we do not print a certificate. If you are sitting a named exam, read that notification for the exact penalty. Use this page to become fast and clean enough that the rule is not the problem.
How to practise for an English skill test
- Sit the 10-minute test once or twice a week. That is the real clock.
- Do not chase a lucky 1-minute score. The one-minute test is a warm-up, not the exam.
- Accuracy first. Below roughly 95% you spend more time fixing mistakes than you would have spent typing a little slower.
- Then drill the keys that failed. After the test, adaptive lessons start on your slow and sloppy keys — including capitals and punctuation, which exams actually contain.
- Keep sessions short on the other days. Ten focused minutes of lessons beat an hour of retyping a passage you already know.

Lessons and tests here are English (Latin script). No InScript, no Remington, no 30 WPM Hindi paper.

Is the English typing test free?
Yes. The 1-minute, 3-minute, and 10-minute tests, plus the adaptive lessons after them, are free. There is no account, no ads, and no certificate to buy.
How long is the English typing test?
You can run 60 seconds, 180 seconds, or 10 minutes. Ten minutes is the length most English government skill tests use. The 10-minute mode starts a 600-second countdown.
What is 35 WPM in a 10-minute test?
Using the standard five-characters-per-word definition, 35 WPM is 1,750 correctly typed characters in ten minutes. 30 WPM is 1,500. Type Fast reports net WPM from correct characters. Exam boards may also apply their own error-percentage rules.
Do I need an account?
No. There is no signup and no email. Progress is saved in the browser on that computer.
Is this the official SSC typing test?
No. This is free English practice with a 10-minute clock. It is not Staff Selection Commission software, it does not use a board-specific error table, and it does not issue a skill-test certificate. Read the notification for the post you are sitting.
Can I practice Hindi typing here?
Not yet. Type Fast's tests and lessons are English (and a few other Latin-script languages). There is no Hindi, InScript, or Remington layout. If your post is Hindi 30 WPM, you need a Hindi trainer for that half.
