Keyboarding is how written work actually gets done: essays, research notes, emails to a co-op, and the computer-based tests most kids will sit. Hunt-and-peck is a tax on every one of those. Assignments get written
A child who can type can draft, revise, and turn in work without the keyboard being the bottleneck. That is the whole point of teaching it.
Research stays in notes
Looking something up only helps if the notes keep up. Typing fast enough to capture a thought is a study skill, not a nicety.
Computer-based tests
State tests, placement exams, and later the SAT-style screens all assume a keyboard. Slow typing burns the clock on questions they already know.
College and work
Almost every next step still starts at a keyboard. Comfortable touch typing is one of the few skills that transfers to every subject.
A week with Type Fast
You do not need a pacing guide. The trainer picks the next key from what this child actually mistypes and hesitates on. A simple week looks like this:
- Monday–Thursday: one adaptive lesson, about ten minutes. Start at practice. The first sessions stay on a few home-row letters; new keys unlock only when the current set is solid.
- Friday: a 60-second test, or the daily challenge if they want the same passage everyone else typed that day.

- Set a daily goal in Settings so the streak is the habit, not a worksheet you have to print.
What the child does
There is one path, not a catalog of grade packs. Lessons measure each key — and the transition into it — then spend the next session on whatever is actually slow. The curriculum is seventy keys, taught one at a time: letters, then capitals, then punctuation, then digits. A capital E is simply the next key, not a checkbox that dumps the whole Shift row at once. What the parent sees
There is no live teacher dashboard and no remote gradebook. You are the teacher on this computer.
One profile per child
The profile chip in the nav switches between kids. Each profile keeps its own keys, streaks, and game scores, so siblings do not overwrite each other.
The Data page is the report
Open Data on that child's profile: a keyboard heatmap, per-key mastery, session history. Sit next to them and look at it together.
Export a backup
Settings → Export backup downloads every profile as a JSON file. Import it after a browser reset, or onto a new laptop. Progress does not follow a child automatically.
Language, if you need it
Settings can switch lessons to Spanish, French, German, or Portuguese. Each profile keeps its own unlocked keys for that language.
Safe for kids by design
Type Fast is free with no ads, so nothing flashes at your child mid-lesson and a stray click cannot leave the site. There are no accounts, no chat, no comments, and no social features — nobody can contact your child through the page. All scores and progress are stored in the browser on your own device; nothing is uploaded to a server. Sound effects can be toggled off in Settings. After the first visit it works offline, and you can install it as an app on a laptop or Chromebook if you want it one tap from the home screen. Progress stays in that browser unless you export a backup.
Type Fast vs a paid homeschool typing program
Paid products such as Typesy sell a classroom-in-a-box: accounts, assigned lesson packs, a live teacher dashboard, and (often) pets, videos, and grade-level tracks. That is a real product for a real job. It is not the job most homeschool families have on day one.

Pick a paid program if you need live grading across devices, assigned lesson packs by grade, or a dashboard you can check from another room. Type Fast will not grow a teacher portal to match that.
Pick Type Fast if you have one computer, two or three kids, no budget for another subscription, and you do not want ads or an email on a child's screen. Fifteen minutes a day, a profile each, and you can see the heatmap yourself.
Homeschool typing FAQ
Is Type Fast free for homeschool?
Yes. Adaptive lessons, eight games, timed tests, the data page, and local profiles are all free. There is no paid tier, no Plus, and no ads to remove.
Do I need an account?
No. There is no signup and no email. A child can start the first lesson as soon as the page loads. Progress is saved in the browser on that computer.
Can each child have their own progress?
Yes. Create a local profile for each child from the profile chip in the nav or in Settings. Switching profiles loads that child's keys, streaks, and game scores. Progress does not follow them to another browser unless you export a backup and import it there.
What age can start?
Kids who can read simple words can start with Key Pop and Word Rain on easy — roughly age 6 and up. Adaptive lessons begin with a few home-row letters, so a beginner is never staring at a wall of text. Older kids and teens use the same path; the mastery bar is set from their own speed.
Does it work offline / on a Chromebook?
Yes. After the first visit, a service worker caches the app so practice continues without a connection. It runs in any modern browser on a laptop or Chromebook, and you can install it as an app from the browser. Progress stays in that browser unless you export a backup.
Can I use our spelling list?
Yes. Paste this week's spelling words — or any passage — into custom mode. The text never leaves the device. There is no extra fee for word lists.
Is it safe (ads, chat, data)?
